Along with their flagship Xperia Z, Sony also took the occasion to announce the Xperia ZL – which is similar to the Xperia Z in most respects except the missing IP57 dust- and water-resistance certification - in India today.
While the Xperia ZL won’t be as rugged as the Xperia Z, the presence of a hardware camera shutter button should more than make up for it for many prospective customers. Otherwise, the Xperia ZL sports exactly the same specs as its stronger sibling – including the 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, and the 13-megapixel camera.
The Xperia ZL runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Sony’s Timescape UI, with an update to Android 4.2 promised by Sony soon after launch. Other specs include a 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB built-in storage and a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, HSPA 42mbps, A-GPS with GLONASS and NFC connectivity, and a 2,300 mAh battery.
There’s no certain date of release yet for the Xperia ZL (nor for the Xperia Z for that matter) – Flipkart says sometime in the 3rd week of March while Infibeam lists a March 9 release, which is exactly what they say for the Xperia Z as well. Hopefully we’ll find out the exact date in the coming days, but for now we’ll just settle for “sometime in March”.
As for price, the Xperia ZL will set you back Rs. 35,990, which is certainly an amazing price tag for all the oomph you get with the device. Sony has surprised us with this pricing scheme for both the Xperia Z and ZL, and it will be exciting to see how Samsung and HTC play the game with their own upcoming flagship phones.
