There are multiple versions of AOKP, each based on a specific Android version, so first let’s take a look at each version and their details.

Take a backup of all the data on your phone. Flashing AOKP ROM requires unlocking the bootloader on the phone which wipes everything from the phone and factory resets it. Use our Android Backup Guide for help on how to back up apps and other data, such as contacts, SMS, bookmarks, etc. Then, after you’ve backed personal data up, copy everything off the phone’s storage to a computer. NOTE: Backup is optional and you can skip this step if you do not wish to back up anything.Unlock the bootloader on your Nexus S using this guide. Unlocking bootloader wipes all data from the phone so make sure you take a backup as mentioned in step 1. NOTE: If you’ve already unlocked the bootloader on your device, you can skip this step.You will need to a custom recovery installed that allows the installation of custom ROMs. Install either ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery by using this guide or TWRP recovery using this guide (it’s recommended to use TWRP recovery as it has a better and more convenient interface).Download the latest version of the AOKP ROM that you wish to flash on your phone, using the download link given below. Android 4.1.2 and 4.0.4 are listed on the same page, so make sure to download the correct one – 4.1.2 builds are under “JB” and 4.0.4 builds are under “ICS”.Download AOKP 4.2.2 | Download AOKP 4.1.2/4.0.4You also need to download the Google apps package, as AOSP ROMs like AOKP do not bundle official Google apps by default, such as Gmail, Talk, YouTube, Play Store, etc due to licensing issues, so they need to be installed separately. Download GappsCopy the ROM and Gapps files to the internal storage on your phone. Make sure to copy the two .zip files, don’t extract them.Turn off your phone.Boot into fastboot mode by holding down the Volume Up + Power buttons together till Fastboot Mode shows up on screen. Then, press the volume down key till the “RECOVERY” text is highlighted in fastboot mode, then select it by pressing the power button to make the phone boot into recovery.First, we need to do a data wipe, which will wipe installed apps and settings but will not wipe files on the internal storage. To wipe data: CWM Recovery: Select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm. Wait a while till the data wipe is complete.TWRP Recovery: Select Wipe, then select Factory Reset. Then slide the circle at bottom to the right to confirm data wipe. Once data wipe is complete, go back to the main TWRP screen.Now, let’s install the ROM and the Google Apps package. Follow the steps below according to whichever recovery you’ve installed. CWM Recovery: Select install zip from sdcard, then select choose zip from sdcard. Scroll to the ROM file and select it (select “0/” first if you don’t see the list of files on storage). Confirm installation on the next screen.After ROM installation completes, select choose zip from sdcard again, then select the Gapps file to install the Google apps package.TWRP Recovery: Select Install, then browse and select the ROM file. Confirm installation by dragging the circle to the right.After ROM installation completes, go back to the main TWRP screen, select Install again and then browse and select the Gapps file to install the Google apps package.Once installation of the ROM and Gapps package is complete, we need to reboot the phone into the ROM. To do that: CWM Recovery: Go back to the main recovery menu and select reboot system now.TWRP Recovery: Select the Reboot system button which should have shown up after installation was complete. If not, go back to the main recovery screen, select Reboot, then select System to reboot.The first boot can take a few minutes, so don’t panic if it takes 5-7 minutes to do so. After the phone boots up into the ROM, you can set it up and also restore any data that you wish to.AOKP ROM is now installed on your Nexus S.
As development continually goes on, there will be updates to the ROM regularly, which usually fix problems or include new features. In order to update to a newer version, here’s what you need to do.
Download the latest update from the AOKP downloads page.Copy the ROM to the internal storage on your phone.Boot into recovery. Now, since we are updating to a newer version, you do not need to wipe data again. Wiping data is only required when you install a ROM for the first time.Make a backup of your current ROM, so that you can restore if the phone fails to boot after updating to the new version. This isn’t important as updating usually works properly, but it is still a good idea to take a backup just in case. To take a backup: CWM Recovery: Select Backup and Restore, then select Backup again to start backing up your current ROM. Once backup is complete, go back to the main recovery menu.TWRP Recovery: Select Backup, then swipe the circle to the right to start backup. Once backup completes, go back to the main recovery menu.Install the ROM update similar to how we installed the ROM in step 4 of the installation guide. Also install the Google Apps package.Once installation is done, reboot the phone to boot up into the updated ROM.After updating, if the ROM fails to boot, then you will have to restore the previous ROM. To do that, boot into recovery, then select the Backup and Restore option (the Restore option in TWRP recovery), and restore your previous ROM by selecting it from the given list.AOKP ROM is now installed on your Nexus S.
